I spilled a pint of tea over my laptop! 😮☕️💻

business stories
Hard day

I'd like to start by saying there's not really any point (or much substance) to this blog. Because I work alone and no-one is ever here to witness this stuff, sometimes I just find these things therapeutic to share. The moral of the story is very plain to see from the title - don't put drinks near computers. So with that out of the way... here we go.

I am going to write about all the work I’ve been doing over the past weeks and months to completely overhaul my offers and consequently my website - I want to talk about the reasons why I think it will be better for customers, and some honest truths about why I hope it will be better for me. So more to come on that.

But - for now I’ll keep it focussed on my most recent biz drama. 😩

Backstory…. the company who provide the software gubbins for me to manage customer accounts and my website made a massive change to how us as customers build and manage our websites - meaning my whole website had to be rebuilt on their new software. They did help me do that but back January the whole hullabaloo took weeks and an enormous amount of my time. But it all got done and my website transferred over to the new system pretty seamlessly, and I will admit, did look a bit better.

I had already decided I was going to reduce the amount of different subscription plans I offer (from 4 to 2) and start offering a Starter Kit as a new ‘try before you subscribe’ option for people. So I knew the website was going to need another overhaul but didn’t have time to get all the prep done in time for the rebuild, so I knew I’d have to do it all again - but hey ho.

Fast forward 3 months (life events + holiday = very little time to work on things like this in the business), I finally started all the prep to update my products and the website. I can’t tell you how much work it’s been - a good 12 hours a day, every day, for 3 weeks solid (plus all the thinking stuff and prep that came before it). I’m positive my glasses prescription must have deteriorated by a year in a month.

So, after much hard work, I finally press ‘go’ on the website update of my first big batch of changes… it starts working… spinny things are spinning… technical things are building and processing…. and I’m like “right we’re off!”. 🚀

Cue (I still don’t actually know how I knocked it) a flask full of hot tea all over my MacBook. It pretty much went like this..

↓ Shouting and swearing 🤬

↓ Turn laptop upside down and pour tea out over brand new carpet 🫟

↓ Angle it a few ways to get more tea out 🔝

↓ Get kitchen roll (while holding upside down) 🌪️

↓ Look at screen (upside down) to see if website build is still running ok - it was 🤞🏼

↓ Open ChatGPT with other hand - ask it what to do / not to do - clear instruction to turn off immediately, not an option - I’m mid-update. 💬

↓ Try and get kitchen roll in and around the keyboard (upside down) 😵‍💫

↓ Look at screen (upside down) to see if website build is still running ok - it was 🙏

↓ Call Apple support - 30 mins asking q’s - “turn off immediately / don’t use kitchen roll” (oops) + “leave it off for 2 days” (2 days??) 😩

↓ Website build (part 1 of MANY, took 2 days to prep) - finishes ok - phew 😮‍💨

↓ Position laptop, upside down on sofa to look at it for 2 days 😢

↓ Get out old windows computer - hasn’t been started for a year 😬

↓ Many software updates / unexpected shutdowns / blue screen of death / boring time consuming stuff to make computer work 😴

↓ 2 days pass ⏳

↓ Turn on MacBook🤞🏼

↓ It works! Hurrah! 🙌🏼

↓ 4 days pass 🙃

↓ “Beep” - every 9 seconds 🧐

↓ Goes away, 2 days later… “beep” 🙈

↓ Run diagnostics - right side fan is knackered 😭

↓ Call Apple - £600 (if it’s just the fan) 🪭

↓ Next day - back up MacBook to hard drive (not been done since 2024, took… a while.) 🤦🏼‍♀️

↓ Mid backup - “beep….” - blow on computer, beeping seems to stop 😂

↓ Next day - “beep….” - blow on computer, beeping seems to stop 🤔

🔄 From now on: repeat daily and hope for the best! 💨🤞🏼

At the day of writing (☕️ +11 days) - no beeps so far today and thus, the end of this tale. Praise be. 🙏
